The International English Language Testing System or IELTS is a language test that evaluates your skills in English usage. It is accepted by over 10000 institutions worldwide and is also mandatory for the visas of some English speaking countries. It is supposed to be taken by prospective students who wish to study abroad and also by some classes of visa holders.

There are two types of the IELTS test.

  1. Academic – This version is for the students pursuing a degree in an English speaking country.
  2. General Training – This version is for people who wish to undertake non-academic training in an English speaking nation.

The IELTS test has 4 sections.

  1. Listening – It has a total of 4 parts and 40 questions that need to be completed in 30 minutes. (10 minutes answer transfer time)
  2. Reading – It has a total of 3 parts and 40 questions that need to be attempted within 60 minutes.
  3. Writing – It has 2 tasks that need to be finished within 60 minutes.
  4. Speaking – A total of 4 tasks that last anywhere between 11-15 minutes.

The results of the test are released on the 13th day after the test. The scorecard will be available on the 15th day.

 IELTS Test fee is being revised to INR 14,000 for registrations from 1st-April-2020.

No. there is no pass or fail marks in the test. You are graded on a 9 band scale with 0 being the least proficient and 9 being an expert user.

WHAT IELTS SCORE IS CONSIDERED GOOD?

The minimum qualifying score varies from university to university. The more prestigious ones demand a band score of 7+ while a 5.5 band score is considered must for admission abroad.

CAN THE TEST BE RETAKEN? AFTER A GAP OF HOW MANY MONTHS?

There is no upper limit on the number of times you can retake the test. Before, there used to be a compulsory 3 month waiting period before you could sit the test again. But owing to the rising enthusiasm of students, that rule has been discarded. Now, you need not wait to retake the test.
